The power of Romanian Community Center – we believe in our community!
It’s wonderful to see how the Romanian community’s involvement in our area has grown over the last few months and the positive impact it has had on its members. Everybody who’s come in contact with the Romanian Community Center knows that RCC is built with and for the Romanians in our community.
So, why would anyone become part of Romanian Community Center?
Sense of belonging and support: Being part of the Romanian community provides a sense of belonging, identity, and support. Connecting with others who share similar experiences is vital for our psychological well-being. Connection and belonging: Getting involved in the community help us feel connected to others and part of something larger than ourselves. We’re not alone in our struggles and there are people we can turn to for support. Learning: RCC allows us to learn about shared values, beliefs, history, and culture.
Having a place in the world: Anyone can now be part of a community that gives us a sense of purpose and importance. It reinforces that we are contributing to something meaningful. Connecting with the RCC community: consider attending monthly Romanian nights, participating in chess and backgammon sessions, IT classes and career coaching, or learning Romanian language through

What the Romanian Community Means to Me Hailey Trimbur
In 2022, I had the privilege of becoming part of the Reading Romanian community through my boyfriend, Robert. I found myself immersed in a world that resonated with echoes of the past and promises of newfound belonging. Buni Doina, Robert’s grandmother, became the unexpected anchor in my life—a connection to a heritage I had longed for but never fully experienced.
My grandmother was also an immigrant and spoke very broken English.
Growing up, I can recall being curious about her upbringing in Japan and through all of my childhood, I clung to this heritage that I still cherish to this day. About two years ago, she passed away and almost simultaneously, I met Buni Doina. It wasn’t until I met this kind spirit, a beacon of Romanian warmth and resilience, that I truly understood what cultural communities look and feel like.
Some of our time together spent making Sarmale (stuffed cabbage)—a cherished Romanian dish—was more than culinary artistry; it was a tapestry woven with stories of Buni’s life. I listened attentively, grateful for the opportunity to hear these tales firsthand. Buni spoke in Romanian, her voice animated with memories, while Robert translated. Even in translation, Buni’s spirit shone through, proud and resilient. Incredibly grateful to be able to experience and listen to her stories about almost her entire life while she was teaching us how to wrap the meat into the cabbage leaves. The first large gathering I spent with the Romanian community was a watershed moment. Strangers welcomed me with open arms, eager to share their culture and stories. Towards the end of the night, friends and family gathered for a group photo. Buni, recognizing the significance of this moment, pulled me to her side—a gesture that spoke volumes of acceptance and inclusion.
I felt so welcomed by everyone, I was greeted with kindness. People I’d never met were introducing themselves to be so warmly, placing their hands on my shoulders. I was offered food and asked how it tasted, I was offered drinks and was even asked to play in a volleyball game. Though I cannot speak Romanian, through the 2 years of knowing her, I can understand how she’s feeling through her speech patterns and gestures. And in those 2 years, many times she would knock at the door asking, “Hailey! Hungry?” and I’d reply with, “No, Mulţumesc” or “Yes! Mulţumesc!”. Sometimes, she shouts it from the deck through the window. It would always make me smile. On the times I’d say yes, we’d enjoy a mostly silent morning eating breakfast or an afternoon eating lunch. Through Buni’s stories and the warmth of newfound friends, I’ve discovered a sense of belonging that has enriched my life in ways I never imagined possible. As I continue on this journey, I carry with me not just memories, but a profound gratitude for the family I’ve found within this vibrant community.

In the digital world of today, it is crucial to stay vigilant and recognize potential threats that could impact our security and well-being. Recently, more and more people have received fraudulent emails pretending to offer attractive financial opportunities, but these are, in fact, traps designed to exploit the trust and naivety of
those who respond. A common example of such emails includes stories about large sums of money found
under dubious circumstances, such as a supposed member of the Ukrainian army claiming to have found funds in a military base. These emails ask the recipient to keep the matter secret and promise a "100% legal and safe" collaboration. In reality, these are tactics used by criminals to lure you into a fraud scheme.
It is important not to respond to such emails and not to provide any personal or financial information. If you receive such a message, the best course of action is to report it as spam or phishing and delete it immediately. Remember, no legitimate transaction will ask you to keep it secret or act quickly without giving you time to think carefully about the situation.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by constantly informing yourself about these dangers and ensuring that you are always skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true.
Your security is a priority, and the better informed we are, the less vulnerable we become to these attacks.
